Setting limits and being consistent is the golden rule of good discipline. Be kind and firm when setting rules and enforcing them. Focus on the reason for the child's misbehavior. And make it an opportunity for them to learn for the future in a positive way, instead of being punished for the past.
In his new book, The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting, Laurence Steinberg, PhD, offers guidelines based on major research in the social sciences: about 75 years of study. Follow them and you can avoid all kinds of child behavior problems, he says. Steinberg's 10 principles apply to anyone who deals with children: coach, teacher, babysitter, she says.
